Spin-Off Games I Wish Existed

Merry Christmas! (1)Everyone is talking about what games may or may not get revealed at The Game Awards this year.  There are rumors floating about from potential Bioshock continuations to what exactly Obsidian’s next game will be, or whether Obsidian might even be working on a Bioshock continuation.  I love speculation and want to participate, but instead of talking about games that I believe will be revealed based on hearsay, I want to talk about the games I wish existed.  These are titles that I have made up in my head based on existing franchises that I would fund the creation of tomorrow if I had millions of dollars to throw around  Of course, AAA developers, if you are out there reading this post, take notes, okay?

Note:  There are heavy spoilers for Danganronpa V3 below.  Skip this entry if you don’t want to be spoiled.

Pre-War Fallout

Whenever I run around the Fallout universe, I always find that there is one thought going through my head:  What did this all look like before the bombs dropped?  We got a few hints of this in the introduction to Fallout 4, but I would love to see so much more.  I want to roam around the Fallout universe in its pre-war glory and learn more about what the culture was like before the bombs dropped.  This probably wouldn’t work overly well as a traditional western RPG experience, but as an adventure game or perhaps even a light simulation title as a group of Vault-Tec employees running the company, I think there is a lot of promise in this idea.

Following A Particular Character in Danganronpa

I am not putting the specific character’s photo here so as not to spoil the game for someone scrolling over this section to avoid reading it, but I would love to see a new Danganronpa series following Rantaro.  As we learn at the end of Danganronpa V3, Rantaro has played the killing game before and somehow ended up a participant for a second time.  Rantaro is a fascinating character that dies too early and squanders any potential he had for development.  A game that allows for Rantaro’s character to fully develop, as well as a chance to learn more about how he came about being in the killing games twice, would be really interesting.  This would also allow fans to wrap their heads further around the idea of V3 being a reality TV show and shed some light on the validity of various fan theories.  It would be a perfect wrap-up to this series.

Final Fantasy X:  What About Braska and Jecht?

Throughout Final Fantasy X, the player picks up a number of Jecht Spheres that give some context about the pilgrimage that Yuna’s father, Braska, went through prior to her own journey.  Personally, I always wanted to see more about that journey and play it for myself.  It would be fun to experience Spira before Yuna’s tumultuous pilgrimage, and it could dive more deeply into the faith of Yevon.  It would also be interesting to learn more about what happened to Jecht and Braska when the final aeon was summoned, as we never saw this with Yuna in the main game.

Persona, Persona 2:  Innocent Sin, and  Persona 2:  Eternal Punishment Redesigned

This is probably a little controversial, as I know that the original Persona and both Persona 2 titles are quite popular with fans and they are stellar JRPG titles.  No matter how hard I try, however, I can’t get into them because I miss the social aspects of the later games in the series.  If the first three games were all remade from the ground up with the same story and characters, but the social management elements of the later entries were added in, the games would gain a whole new generation of fans.  The story and characters in the earlier titles are interesting, so I am certain that a fresh coat of paint and some modernization would make these games a lot of fun for new players.

Based on the games I have created in my head, I think I must prefer getting game prequels to game sequels.  Whenever I see some intriguing plot, character, or lore element in a game, I want to know everything about it, and sometimes the best way to learn more is to have a new game exploring this topic.  Additionally, I find it much easier to admit in my head that a prequel will never happen than a sequel, because I always hold out hope that I am going to get a sequel made one day.  As far as my brain is concerned, there is no such thing as a dead franchise!

What games would you like to see made, even though they probably will never happen?  Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Ooh, these are interesting! Adding social links to older Personas would definitely be cool. As for my two spin-offs…
I would like a spin-off of Ocarina of Time about the seven years while Link is asleep after pulling the Master Sword. The story would focus on Zelda as the protagonist and show us how she becomes Sheik, and the kingdom’s slow descent into darkness.
I also want a Paper Luigi game based on his stories in The Thousand-Year Door, showing us what really happened. Getting to see his partners in action and play out all his misadventures in the classic Paper Mario style would be a lot of fun, especially since we haven’t had a proper Paper Mario in ages.

  2. I agree a pre-war Fallout game would be fun to play! I just played Fallout New Vegas & I had the same feeling as you where I wanted to know what the towns looked like before. The game could take place when the vaults were being built so you can learn more about them & what not

I would love to play an Elder Scrolls game that is set in Elsweyr. I love playing as a khajiit so it would be awesome to see where they’re from

  3. I love that you mentioned Persona because I’m in the same boat as you. I’m a new Persona player (part 5 was my first) and I can’t get into any of the games under 4 because of they lack certain features that the newer games have. I would love to replay those.

Here are some games I would like to see

Alpha Protocol 2 or something like it
A Fallout game that isn’t so barren. Not exactly prewar, but something different than your usual Wasteland. Maybe a snow covered area or just introduce seasons to the series so every area feels fresh. And let us see what the other side of the world looks like.

Mass Effect Andromeda 2 or some single player DLC would be fantastic.

Jade Empire and either a remake or re-imagining of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic.

    1. I definitely want Andromeda 2. The first Andromeda wasn’t perfect, but the stage is set for a great second entry if they take the story and gameplay criticisms to heart. I want to explore more of the amazing world created here!

      1. I didn’t have a problem with the story or gameplay. The gameplay is the best Bioware has ever produced, until Anthem anyway, and I wouldn’t mind having more of that. I loved Andromeda. It’s not perfect, but I think it’s better than the first Mass Effect game in many ways.
