Gryffindor Video Games

Yesterday, I wrote about five books that Gryffindors should read as a part of Top Five Tuesday from Bionic Book Worm.  Since I write about both books and games, however, I think it is only fair that I also recommend some video games on the same topic.  When I think of this Hogwarts house, I tend to think of action-packed video games that feature fearless protagonists.  Let’s see which titles Gryffindors should be checking out!

Assassin’s Creed II

I had a lot of trouble deciding whether Ezio or Kassandra better embodied the traits of a Gryffindor, but I ultimately decided to side with my favorite Renaissance assassin for his unwavering devotion towards his family.  He knows that going after the people who killed the men in his family could be a suicide mission, but he doesn’t let this deter him.  In addition to being brave, which is the primary trait people associate with the Gryffindor house, members of this house are also stubborn and have a good sense of humor, meaning that Ezio’s personality also fits the mold perfectly.

Fallout:  New Vegas

It is hard to place games that allow different playstyles depending on the player’s moral compass, but Fallout:  New Vegas has the courier exhibiting the telltale traits of being a Gryffindor, regardless of the path taken through the main story.  The protagonist starts by being shot in the head and ends up getting involved in a huge political struggle simply due to being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Still, instead of fleeing in fear, the courier solves the conflict and saves (or dooms) the New Vegas area.

Dragon Age:  Inquisition

The inquisitor of Dragon Age:  Inquisition is a Gryffindor for many of the same reasons as the courier.  From waking up with a strange power to close demon rifts without any particular knowledge as to why this has happened, the inquisitor is tasked with saving the entire world from a terrible fate.  In particular, the inquisitor’s willingness to take charge and become a leader when one is needed for the movement is indicative of Gryffindor qualities.

What Remains of Edith Finch

Sometimes, Gryffindors don’t need to save the world in order to be brave.  Many people would have run away from the creepy house where generations of relatives died and never looked back.  Edith Finch, however, wants to make sure that her family’s history is on record.  I thought about using this game for the Ravenclaw games recommendation because Edith clearly has a love of knowledge, but ultimately, the amount of courage that it takes to be willing to go into this house and live through these memories gives her a Gryffindor edge.

Tomb Raider

Last but not least is Lara Croft from Tomb Raider.  While any and all games in the franchise apply here, I am specifically talking about the 2013 reboot.  Lara is absolutely terrified when she wakes up hanging upside-down in a cocoon.  Instead of dying then and there, however, she resourcefully figures out how to escape and proceeds to live through a veritable nightmare with her head held high.  In addition to the character being a Gryffindor, this is also a great game for people who associate themselves with the house, as there are some tense and scary moments that will test your bravery.
