Geek Out Challenge Day 8 – My Geeky Hobby

Yesterday’s Geek Out prompt gave me the opportunity to discuss the fandom that shocked me the most with how much I came to love it.  Today, Megan from A Geeky Gal has challenged bloggers to discuss their geeky hobby.  Since my primary means of expressing my geekiness is actually blogging, I thought I would write a bit about why I started The Hannie Corner, as well as what drives me to create new posts.

I have always loved to write.  When I was a child, I would draw stick figures on printer paper with crayons and then write little stories about what they were doing.  In college, I majored in English and my favorite part of my literature classes wasn’t actually reading the books (though I loved that, too), but instead putting together the papers where I analyzed the texts and came up with my own theories about the author’s intention regarding a certain plot point or character.  Writing has always been my primary means of expressing myself, which is why it’s a bit shocking that it took me so long to get around to blogging.

While I did briefly attempt blogging back in 2016 and those posts still exist, my habit of consistently posting started back in May of 2018.  There was a Twitch stream of a Vault Boy from the Fallout series and a countdown timer, which was making everyone go absolutely nuts with theories about what this could mean.  Like many other geeks out there, I wanted to discuss my own thoughts about what could potentially be happening, but I didn’t know how to go about it.  Since I had been debating the possibility of blogging for a while, I decided to use this Vault Boy mystery as my inspiration.  I started up HannieBee Games and wrote my first post that night.

Since I began blogging, I have written about 175 posts.  While I started off as a gaming blog, I decided to eventually merge my abandoned 2016 blog with HannieBee Games in order to create The Hannie Corner, mostly because I wanted to be able to discuss the books I read without feeling like I was betraying the game-focused purpose of my initial website.  I’ve met quite a few really cool bloggers, learned a lot about my own writing style, and become part of a great community of geeks who love to share their thoughts via writing.

Blogging isn’t always easy.  It can take up a lot of my free time to constantly brainstorm posts, write them, and market my posts on social media.  No matter how much I may try not to think about my reader count, it can be frustrating to write on something I care about and then have the stats show that no one is reading it.  Regardless, I’m so glad that I started my little corner of the internet because it’s given me a great way to express myself while I simultaneously strengthen my writing skills.  Nothing is more awesome than finishing a video game and brainstorming how I am going to approach writing about it in the future.

Thanks so much to A Geeky Gal for coming up with the Geek Out challenge!  Take a look at her post for today’s topic here.  What is your geeky hobby?  Let me know in the comments below!
